So you're a dedicated hardcore AV fan and you've been watching High Definition TV since you were in your nappies.
You've got all your HD sources rigged up to your HD TV and the World couldn't be any better!
You've got Sky HD, FreeSAT HD, both the XBox 360 and Sony PS3 games consoles, and to boot you've

got a defunct Toshiba HD DVD Player (you backed the wrong horse, again) and an all singing, all dancing, shiny shiny top of the line Pioneer Blu Ray player.
Pictures on HD appear to come out of the screen and you now have a new found kinship for TV presenters because even with all their TV make up, in HD you can see all their blemishes, boils, warts and all - they're not a special breed of human genetically engineered for TV anymore, they're regular people, just like you and me. In HD you now have an empathy with them, especially if their having a bad hair day.
Life doesn't get any better than this.

'But what about your neighbours? More than six million Brits think they are already watching HD TV - but are not connected to the right set top boxes or Blu-ray disc player.
In other words they are able to watch only standard definition content on their expensive HD-ready TVs.

This is the headline finding of a survey of 9,500 people commissioned by the British Video Association, which found that more than 55 per cent of British households had bought HD-ready TVs "without seemingly having appreciated the experience high definition screens are meant to deliver".

How does the BVA, a trade body that represents content owners, arrive at 6.5 million HD virgins? It extrapolates this from its study which revealed that 28 per cent of people "think they can watch movies in high definition with a DVD player when actually a Blu-ray player or a high definition set-top box is needed to do so, and a further 27 per cent believe that an HDTV shows everything in high definition".

The UK is not swimming in high-def content on free-to-watch TV channels: there are currently three HD channels available to Freesat viewers, three for FreeviewHD viewers ( if you're close enough to one of the 5 transmitters broadcasting HD, ) while 41 are available for paying 'through the nose' Sky Digital customers and 12 through Virgin Media.

Most HD-channel viewers today, clueless or not, will have HD-set boxes supplied by their TV provider.

But the World Cup in June is expected to boost sales of HD-Ready TVs. The message to customers is: buy an HD TV with integrated FreeSAT HD or buy a Blu Ray player with an HDTV, otherwise you'll be better off with your trusted non-HD big behemoth that is your CRT TV.
