It's an amazing fact that in a recent survey amongst European consumers that 95% of those asked who own an HD TV only watch standard definition (SD). That leaves only 5% who actually watch high definition (HD) on a HD TV.
It seems that some of those interviewed had been convinced by staff at Currys, Comet, John Lewis. . . , is that all they need to do is to plug in an aerial or scart and voila! Glorious HD.
Well sadly not. Unless you subscribe to Sky HD, FreeSAT HD or another HD service, you are watching plain vanilla standard definition (SD) TV, no different to what you were previously watching on your old beloved CRT TV, chunky monster that is was. And lets be frank hear, the old and 'physically challenged ' TV gave a much better picture on SD than your skinny flat panel. Try and watch a football match on your flat panel TV, Pioneer Kuros excluded, and tell me that you can pick out every blade of grass on the pitch, every shirt number, every bead of sweat. The grass on flat panels now looks like a sea of green and the players look like they're being followed by their spirits. Just awful

Well it looks like Toshiba have seen a gap in the market, a huge 95% gap, and have come up with a resolution to this problem, aptly called Resolution +, and would you believe it involves the Sony PS3, in a kind of roundabout way.
They have taken the cell processor that is the brains of the PS3, which was a joint venture between Toshiba, IBM and Sony, and stuck it in their new range of ZV555D flat panel LCD TVs. |

OK, so what is it? Is it a HDD/DVD Digital Recorder? Is it a multi-channnel receiver? Is it an uspcaling DVD Player? Is it an e-Jukebox? Is it a Jack of all trades? Is it indeed high fashion? Is it the cheapest solution?
In order to answer those questions we should break the system down to its functions.
Multi-Channel Receiver
It is indeed a powerful music/cinema system that is up with latest multi-channel receivers in being able to decode the new HD(High Definition) surround sound formats Dolby HD, DTS HD. It offers 1080p @ 24 frames per second pass through and completely engulfs you in sound from 8 channels.
With enough connectivity for HD DVD, Blu Ray, Sky HD, Virgin HD, Sony PS3, XBox 360 and even your old fashioned VCR, what else could you ask for? Uniquely, there are only 4 speakers plus an active sub woofer on duty for sound but this is where it gets interesting. |

And Toshiba are pinning their hopes on the fact that Z will represent the last word in LCD technology. With some major enhancements over the competition, Toshiba have every right to be proud of their new range.
M100HD picture processing
Firstly they have re-introduced 100Hz scanning, previously seen on the excellent WLT68 range of LCD TVs.
Why is this important? 100Hz refresh rate is twice the refresh rate of most LCD TVs, 50Hz, and by scanning a frame twice the usual bugbear associated with LCD panels, motion smear, is greatly reduced.
When that all important sporting event appears you won't be grinding your teeth because you can't see the fast moving objects, and possibly, just possibly, when we watch England take penalties they may even put some in the back of the net. |

XF+Z = XFZ.
Well no, we can't expect to use algebra when the marketing wizards have a hand in this.
Hence the Picture Frame ZF is born, offering all the goodies of the award winning Z series.

Toshiba has resurrected the 'Picture Frame' concept from its renowned multiple award winning CRT TVs of years past to its latest range of LCD TVs.
The bezel has been shrunk around the screen to a meagre 20mm, from an average bezel width of 55mm. You really have to see one close up to appreciate how beautifully simple and pleasing to the eye this really is.
Two models are available in late September, the 40" 40XF355D and 46" 46XF355D.
